I remember clearly when the national TV aired Topkapı the movie on TRT1, I was a child living with my mother, studying. The movie was about a group of thieves trying to steal a jeweled dragger from the museum of Topkapı. Well, things go wrong, of course… It is still a nice way to watch İstanbul in 1960s, the bazaars, the streets, old wooden mansions, mosques, no Bosphorus bridge, İstanbul when the population was around 1,5 million not 20.
Visually it was a sparkling movie with reflections, Turkish music and clumsiness, romance and fun.
The soundtrack was conducted by Manos Hatzidakis, director Jules Dassin, with the cast Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell, based on the novel The Light of Day by Eric Ambler, shot in 1964.
